ZJ 242 in 1991 XJ?

Is it something that can be done bolt in without breaking open the case and changing the gears? I plan on doing a hack and tap later on but for this winter I'd like to have the full time 4wd. If it is anyone know what year span for the ZJ? Don't know much about them. Thanks in advance

They are bolt in, as long as you have the 23 spline input shaft(if yours is a older 90'- model yours would be 21 spline in which case you do need to swap),the real difference is the shift linkage and you'll have to swap out the transfer case shifter for the 242 iirc
Almost all the ZJ and WJ cake with them unless it had quadradrive in which case it's the 249

I'm an idiot, tried to edit my first post not quote lol

Damn I was thinking 91+ was the 23 spline cases. Sounds like more work than its worth for now. I'll keep hunting an XJ case.

91'+ is 23 spline cases. I might not have typed it right, if your jeep is a 86'-90' then you'll have to swap out the input shaft to make it work. But if your jeep is a 91'+ then the 242 will bolt right in, with the exception of the shift linkage. Sorry I'm tired and can't write right lol

No worries at all. Swapping the linkage is pretty easy if remember correctly and the 231 linkage should work right?

all HO jeeps have 23 spline outputs.

Lots of wierdo stuff chryco did with input gears. Some ZJ cases have a pilot tipped shaft, that will not work behind your AW4. Some did not, those will. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to what is what.

I'd just plan on swapping the input gear. The 231 linkage can be made to work with some mods, but you'll probably want to hunt up one from a limited xj so you can get the right gate and bezel with the proper stops.

93-95 V8 ZJ's: 46RH transmission, 1.55" 23 spline input shaft
93-95 I6 ZJ's with the 42RE: .840" 23 spline input (with collar)
93 I6 ZJ's with the AW4 or AX15: .750" 23 spline input
All 96-98 ZJ's: .840" 23 spline input
All 96-01 XJ's: .840" 23 spline input
92-95 XJ's: .750" 23 spline input
91 and older XJ's: .750" 21 spline input

The above is from the 242 swap thread at JF. If you end up with a donor 242 with the correct input length you still have the planetary gear cut change of ~95 to be concerned with.

This is awesome thank you. I'm on my third XJ, and the first two had the np242. This one has a 231 and after the first time it rained here I decided to swap over to a 242. Those 242 tcases are REALLY hard to find in this part of the country in an XJ, but in a ZJ they're all over the place.

Easy way to remember this if your XJ is newer..

Any non V8/AW4/5speed ZJ 242 will be a bolt in to any 96+ XJ, otherwise you have some work to do.
