My XJ's Big Boy Stage II

Went out to gulches the other weekend. Buddy of mine wanted to test out his new atlas and I wanted to try out my new 1st gear switch. Was a good trip in all but got some thinking to do with the Cherokee.. for some reason my transmission would default to 2nd when in the 1st position regardless of the switch.. I’m not sure if the switch freaked the solenoids out or what. But need to go back square one and start over to find out where it messed up. Other than that planning on adding some front tube here soon if prices will go down but we’ll see. Also I tried a new trail at gulches.. was the first to make it through without winching. Though that didn’t come easy. I did kill my a pillar. Luckily it didn’t kill the cage just the body so it is whatever. One step closer to looking like a crushed up beer can lol

Was this on the new exit of Papa Gulch? I was curious where the new section was. Looks rough. I was there last year and that was the first trail we ran at the park.

If you moved the front axle forward another 2-3 inches would you keep the same track bar mount on the frame and axle side? Seems like the drag link and track bar would cross up with the axle 50 forward from stock.

No probably wouldn’t run the same track bar Mount and I don’t have a drag link to worry about.

Little update.. Been real busy with moving into my new house. Oh btw I bought a new house! Closed at the beginning of December. Wasn’t really planning on it all but my wife and I started looking and everything seemed to fall into place like it was meant to be. Especially in the crazy housing market we have been in. Right at 3acres with a powered shop. House needs a good bit of work and the shop’s electrical needs work but it’s there and it will work. Jeep is gonna need some steering updates. Been getting some terrible death wobble here and there so will probably just bite the bullet on something upgraded but not sure yet. Seems that I’m just taking on project after project lately. Picked up a gooseneck trailer and a camper that I’m planning to put on it. But time will tell with that one. Right now most of my attention and money will be focused on the new casa to have it to the wife’s liking then I can dig into some of my other projects. Have some plans for some other Jeep projects as well as money allows but gonna keep those on the DL till the time is right.

Well my wife joined the club! We traded in her Grand Cherokee for this 2017 JKU. Has a decent amount done to it already so probably won’t be doing much more to it. But the list is below

2017 JKU Sport
  • Spicer Dana 44 front crate axle
  • Electric lockers front and rear
  • 5.38s (I think)
  • Driveshaft conversions front and rear
  • Poison Spyder everything
  • Teraflex steering
  • Spyderlock Beadlocks
  • 38x15.5 Toyo MTs

Will do some small stuff to it. I know first order of business is to downsize the tires to a narrower 12.5 or 13.5” possibly lose the beadlocks. All in do time though.

Congratulations to your wife that's a good looking jeep !!

Okay so been a little while since my last post. Picked up a different camper for the crawler hauler but may be selling the whole set up soon. May be wanting to go with a different set up. With the Jeep however my last trip to Harlan at the end of the September had a pretty major failure that luckily ended the way it did.. I had broke my rear atlas yoke earlier and had just been following around the group in front wheel drive. Coming down from the helli pad after dark, I lost my steering going about 25mph. Turned left and it went straight. Luckily it was into a wall and not off the side of the mountain. It did quite a number on the Jeep. Destroyed the crossmember and broke the front yoke. Was a rough ride but everyone was alright. We were able to get it back to camp and got it back home. Got a new crossmember and been trying to get it back together. Exhaust got tore up and may need to have a shock rebuilt but we’ll see how that goes along the way. Hopefully will be back on the trail soon.

Honestly torn. Part of me wants to truly buggy it out and the other part wants to start building another Jeep chassis from the ground up and move everything over.. I just feel like this one has been cut and welded maybe one too many times.
