Got this email from my school this afternoon and immediately started :laugh2:

Baylor University is providing the following timely warning in response to a crime that recently occurred in proximity to our campus and could represent a threat to the safety of students, faculty and staff.

On March 15, 2010, a Baylor student was approached by an individual at the Common Grounds Coffee Shop who sought money from him. The suspect, a black male between the age of 25-30, claimed he was homeless and asked if the student would give him a ride to the area of the Circle on LaSalle. The student and the suspect walked to the 5th Street garage where the student got his car. The suspect requested the student stop at an apartment near the intersection of S. 10th Street and Speight so he could speak to a friend. The suspect returned to the car with a gun and forced the student to drive to a local bank and withdraw cash. The student escaped from his own vehicle several minutes later, but the suspect maintained custody of the car. The missing vehicle is a 2004 Saab.

The suspect was wearing blue shorts, a dark green or blue hoodie, slippers and a white cap. The suspect is approximately 6’0 tall and 220-240 pounds. He has a pencil thin beard extending from ear to ear and has been seen previously in the Baylor area. The student in this incident is safe we are pleased to report.

A. Students are encouraged to use sound judgment when confronted by an individual seeking money from them. Ideally direct them to a local mission center for assistance such as the Salvation Army. It is best to avoid giving anyone money who comes to you in a random manner.
B. It is recommended that students avoid permitting someone you don’t know to gain entry to your vehicle for any reason.
C. The number of people who are ‘working the streets’ to get money by way of a ‘handout’ has grown in recent years.
D. Take care of ‘number one,’ that is you and avoid putting yourself at risk by isolating yourself with a stranger.

This is a dangerous situation, and students should be alert to those who will take advantage of a student’s kind spirit. It is a fine line we walk, but let common sense prevail.

Who the hell lets a random homeless person in their car and gives them a ride? Who says ok when they ask to stop at a friend's house on the way? This kid deserved what happened to him.

i dont think he 'deserved' it, but he definately made multiple mistakes that led to this....

are hobo's new in texas? ive grown up with them around my entire life, nobody gets money from me. the honest homeless have nobody to blame but the hustlers... in high school i knew a guy who panhandled at melrose every weekend... he took home $200-300 per 'session'.... it's stupid tax, if you pay them, THEY WILL ASK again...
if you give hobo's money, you're retarded.

Another educated idiot.

"We Are The World", "Cum Bay Yah", and Mr. Rogers and all the rest of that crap.

Welcome to the real world.

Think he will vote "Progressive Socialist" in the next election?

He has gone from Ignorant Optimist to Informed Pessimist in one quick lesson!

LOL!

They're everywhere here in Waco, I've had more encounters with them here than I ever did in LA (so long as I stayed out of Santa Monica).

They come up to you in drive-thru's in the middle of the night. Happened to me once; I told the clerk if they didn't take care of the problem its the last time they'd see me in the drive-thru line.

thats funny, i'd think texas type people wouldnt have it, i thought hobo's panhandling was a liberal california thing...

good to hear im not the only one making fast food runs at 2am..

Homeless panhandle everywhere, not just a CA thing. Had em in AZ too. They tend to congregate where the winters are warm.

I haven't been to Common Grounds in years, sounds like its still full of idiots.

I've seen hobo's/bum's (there is a diff.) on campus in Houghton, MI; Stevens Point, WI; and Green Bay. They know that most of the students have been brainwashed. But I do give credit to those that are in those towns, it gets cold!

We have a whole bunch of them up here, most intersections have 30 year old "vietnam vets" (and some older ones who really are vets, based on talking to them) standing at them with cardboard signs. The other day I saw an extremely overweight girl wearing sweatpants trying to panhandle, just then the police rolled up and told her to get lost (I've never seen them hassle the guys who really seem homeless.) I see some older lady show up at another intersection I drive by every day with a cardboard sign too, apparently she hasn't realized that panhandling is more sincere when you aren't wearing makeup and different clothes every day and don't have a cup of dunkin donuts coffee next to your handbag ten feet away on the sidewalk.

I'll pull over and give stranded motorists a ride anytime if they don't seem sketchy (amusingly, the last guy I gave a ride was an offduty police officer from the accident investigation dept, only realized that when he gave me his card as he got out of the Jeep), but people walking around a big city? hell no.

Never seen a Homeless type person up here in the U.P. :D The -30 winters must scare them off!

Just goes to show the innocence of some of these kids. They grow up trusting people and learn these lessons the hard way, but that's what college is all about. Many of it's lessons are not learned in the classroom. Luckily, all he lost was a car.

Oh that is COLD! You help a guy out, and he disses your ride by preemptively providing you with his ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION CARD!! :D :D :D

hahaha, yeah...

Well, he was fairly justified, let's just say that :eyes:

I lived in Santa Cruz for a while. Santa Cruz is a surfing town. There are a *lot* of surf bums there, basically kids who left home to hang out and surf. They panhandled on the street all of the freakin time, never gave 'em nothing.

I lived in NY for a while, didn't see that many bums panhandling. I tried to help when they seemed honest about it (a shopping cart full of their whole world, for example).

Never see any around here. I assume they are around but I don't see them.

Santa Cruz County, CA had a highly effective sheriffs "special patrol". They would pick up the north bound hobos at the southern end of the county and haul them to the northern boundary, pick up the south bounds and haul them to the south boundary, same process east/west. This existed for decades. ACLU finally got wind of it and sued. Bye-bye special patrols, hello hobos and beggars.

Not surprised to see them in Waco. There were a ton of panhandlers when I lived in Austin a year ago. My favorite was the guy that talked on his bluetooth headset and panhandled at the same time. I thought he was talking to himself at first until I spotted his ear piece.
