well after 6 diferent shops i finally found one that would do an alignment job on my 33's. all other shops said it wouldnt fit on there rack. well anyway they told me i need new ball joints and that it would cost $1000. is this a job i could do myself? any write-ups here?

they are most likely telling you that you need "Offset" ball joints, to correct for camber issues. Most shops tell that to anyone with a lifted XJ, assuming that they are required when you lift it which they are not. with basic tools and a tape measure you can do a front alignment yourself in the driveway, camber is not adjustable on the XJ only toe in/out. Caster is slightly adjustable as well but not usually an issue up to 5" of lift or so.
