I work at a state park and drive a 95 xj. I was wondering what the extended idle button is for and how it works?

According to my 95 FSM, the extended idle switch, available only on the police package, is supposed to raise the idle speed to 1000 rpm in park or neutral (but not in gear).

whats the purpose of it? this jeep probably does have a police package cause its an old ranger patrol vehicle.

EPA probably doesn't like 'em for everybody else but the cops got 'em. That's a cool ECU and somebody would love to have that. It also doesn't have a speed limiter if memory serves correctly?

How does that work? Is it just wired to the computer or does it work off a sensor to trick the comp? Would an adjustable map have the same effect?

Not sure how it works. I haven't looked into that yet, but the adjustable MAP doesn't effect idle. It will only lean out or richen the air/fuel mix during warm-up, hard acceleration, and WOT (all open loop modes). At cruise and idle (closed loop) the PCM adjusts mix according to O2 sensor signal.
