XJ won't turn over

Thanks for the tip CJR. I may do that instead of disconnecting the transmission first. That tunnel is not friendly to my bear paw hands and the transmission should be easy to remove as well. Might even wait a little longer and finish my 4x4 conversion while I'm at it.

So just to clarify, you removed the belt and the plugs and it won't turn over using the ratchet on the balancer bolt?

Well that's a bummer.

At least you know you don't need to keep chasing connections and trying new batteries/starters/wires.

Looks like rebuid or replace time.

Dacrane, one more thing to check, and it won't take long.
Pull the distributor and see if the engine loosens up.
If the distributor shaft is seized in it's housing, it will lock
up the engine as you describe. This can happen if an engine
sits for an extended period.
