Gas gauge failure

So occasionally, and I do mean occasionally the gas gauge cuts out on my 1998 xj. I have checked the wiring harness at the back of the vehicle where it is exposed as well as cleaned the connector to the fuel pump which changed nothing. It doesnt take more than a small bump in the road to revive the gauge but I'd like to fix this annoying fault.
I replaced the pump in 2016 with an expensive one (dont remember the brand) and the vehicle runs fine. Does not run any worse at any point in time and fuel pressure is good. Any ideas what to look at next? When it's working it is reading accurately which is 98% of the time

You got a lot to look at! The gauge sensor feeds the ECU, the ECU feeds the cluster via the bus, and then there's the Cluster itself.
