FS: Fuel pump assembly 97+

thats the whole in-tank assembly, including the sending unit. if you need a sending unit that is exactly what you need.
 
why is he telling you that you need a sending unit, is your gauge not working? thats all the fuel level sending unit controls. the little arm coming off that assembly you have there is tells the gauge how much gas is in the tank. if your xj is a 97+ that right there is everything thats in the gas tank. is he telling you that part is wrong and he can get you the right one? if so find another mechanic.

Amen brother. Sounds like he just wants to charge you some more money for parts.
 
if you have a plastic gas tank thats the one you need. it should fix your problem.
