Steering gear dust boot

I read on the interweb that GM part 2600985 is a dust boot for the saginaw gear box. This boot goes between the gear box on the sector shaft and the pitman arm. I read it was an optional part used for offroad, high dirt conditions, to help protect the gear box seals on the shaft

Does any of you all use this part? see link below..

I am thinking of adding this dust boot, comments?

thanks

What would be the purpose?
