Re: Banks headers, worth the coin?

In fairness it reads like marketing copy from the vendor's web site. Cut-n-paste FTW!

Re: Banks headers, worth the coin?

If you were getting one of the old Clifford split headers with 32" equal length primary tubes the claim would be about right compared to a stock (pre CAT) exhaust. See picture below. All mandrel bent, smooth transitions from the flange to the primaries, primaries to collectors and beautiful welding.

I rusted a hole in the old sheet metal header so I ordered a new Clifford header, the one you pictured above and sent it right back. The pipes are not bent gently into the flange, they are just cut off at an angle and welded in, nasty sharp turns, rough welding inside the pipe. Looks nice on the outside, but the sharp edges and rough welds on the inside are a disaster for good flow and short primaries prevent using the exhaust pulses to draw more charge into the engine. Run a long primary header and the HP will go way up, and it works even better with a large cam.

Jack Clifford RIP, but why did you take the quality control with you?

John

Good god that thing is huge. Why all the bungs though? Multiple widebands? EGTs?

x2 and not only quality, but knowledge. On JS someone was told by Clifford to not go above a 2.25" exhaust on a stroker.

Don't waste your time on painting them. It will just burn off.

Re: Banks headers, worth the coin?

Its the living dead!!!!

I wanted to make a correction to my post on this thread. I just picked up a new set of Clifford dual outlet headers. I really slammed Clifford back in 2014 on the build quality and radii used. This new set are much much better. I look forward to putting them on my 66 Rambler American 4.0 stroker.

John

Re: Banks headers, worth the coin?

Just got my banks headers for my 2000 xj.

Is wrapping advisable to help with the heat soak?

Re: Banks headers, worth the coin?

I went with the Banks. Its not cheap, but it is a very nicely made piece. Personally, after doing that header once, I would gladly spend the extra coin to never go through that again!
