Can anyone tell me what they think this noise is?

I know I have a squeaky pulley but there is a strange, sort of grinding noise I do not like........

I hear a squeeky noise. check belt tension, adjust if need be. Try belt dressing spray next, if still squeeky. maybe remove belt and try to free spin the different pulleys, checking for roughness, play, etc...

another technique is to get a hose, maybe 2 or 3 feet long, an old garden hose or such, and with on end on your ear, move other end around the running motor, placing on each component to detect noise source, use like a doctors stethoscope. Be wary of the moving parts, belt, pulley, fan.

Good luck

Sounds like a pulley to me. Have you taken the belt off recently? If you tighten the tensioner pulley bolt too loose or too tight the tensioner may squeak. Could also be the mechanical fan bearing. I'd do what the other dude said and take the belt off and try free spinning stuff. This normally doesnt tell you much since there is no weight on it but it's a start

Thanks guys, I did indeed change the alternator recently. I’ll be removing the belt later and spinning the pulleys.

Solved! I started it without the belt and the noise was gone.
The crunchy compressor pulley is the culprit.

Thanks for the suggestions! They worked as usual!

Thank you for following up with the results and how you found it.

We have a surplus of threads around here that are lacking that all important conclusion.

Thank you.

My pleasure! I love this site.

Now, to figure out how to remove the pulley and replace the bearing.....

Cal did a good write up on that in his Project Unicorn thread (If I recall correctly).

I will see if I can find it.

I hope it wasn't a victim of photobucket.

Found it. Starts at post 124 on page 9: https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1131459&page=9

If your settings are different than mine, and somehow that doesn't work, here is post 124: https://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=246525477&postcount=124

And 125: https://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=246525479&postcount=125

Those two pretty well cover the topic.

Excellent reading! And, since the new bearing did NOT solve the problem (I celebrated too soon) I'll be taking it apart again and referring to this thread.

THANKS!
