Pinion numbers?

Refer to the pic. Left is old. 157 is the set match number. Right is New. 188 is matching number. How to decipher starting pinion shims. Old looks like 1-7. New looks like 4.311.

The old one was "-1" from zero, the new one has no such marking so you get to roll the dice and find out what makes the best pattern.
 
If you don't have a pinion depth tool. Take the old shims off your old pinion and use them as your staring point. That has worked for me in the past and also that was on the instructions of a set of gears I bought.
