Anybody ever add an exhaust flange in?

Hey everybody

Well I'm dropping my transmission soon and years ago i had a new exhaust installed and it's all one piece front to rear. Problem is there are a lot of hangers which I don't want to cut or mess up so I would prefer to add a flange or some kind of connection point right behind the cross member. Anybody don't this and got a suggestion for a part to use. I think I've found a couple but they're about 100 bucks

The exhaust isn't even bolted to the manifold?

When you drop the transmission you will need to remove the cross member. Then unbolt the exhaust at the manifold and the exhaust will drop and you can push it off to the side. The only flange on my exhaust is at the header and it has never been a problem when pulling the transmission.

There is a flange at the header
I just thought adding a flange at the cross member would make things easier
But if there is enough play to drop it to the side then I might not need it

I don't remember if I dropped the mount at the rear though. I am actually able to pull the full 2.5" exhaust out from under the vehicle in one piece as well. Adding an extra leak point seems pointless. If you want to do something to the exhaust add a flex joint some where between the manifold and cross member mount and make sure your engine mounts are in good condition.

Something like this:

On my 91 the end of the downpipe had a flange which is held in place by a hangar that slips into a rubber sleeve on the crossmember. The stock cat converter has a sister flange, and the two flanges are bolted together with a small gasket between them. This lets you disconnect the entire exhaust after the crossmember without moving the downpipe.

The brown funny looking piece in that pic is the hangar for the back of the downpipe, which I got from the dealership easily enough. I am 90% sure that the Magnaflow cat converter I used had a stock flange too. The downpipe was a custom piece, and I had to figure up something else for that. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1062978 I ended up buying the flange with the too-small center hole and cutting the right size, then welding it on to the custom pipe. You can see it bolted to the brown flange in the pics above.

No trouble since.
