This ain't no XJ...

2016 Yamaha Super Tenere

I've been thinking of getting a big adventure bike for a few years now but if you had asked me about it last week I'd have said "yeah, I'll probably get one eventually"

Got this Tuesday. Boy it's fun.

So what happened in one week's time to put one in your hands?

Win the lotto?

The right deal came up and everything just sort of worked out. It was posted to a Facebook group I'm in on Saturday. $10k for a 2016 Super Tenere with 29xx miles is a fair deal for private party, add on that it was from a dealer and included the aftermarket windscreen and Givi bags and the deal was sweetened.

I didn't really expect it to stick around and wasn't able to get down to Orange on Saturday. I got ready to go down there Sunday but they were closed so I hit the "request more info" button and expected it to be sold before I could deal with it. Got on a plane Sunday night for NYC and did some work. I got back from NYC on Tuesday afternoon and before I even had a chance to sit down my phone rang. The bike really existed and was still available. I suited up and rode the DR350 there. A couple hours later I rode it home for $11k out the door with tax, licensing, etc. I circled back later that evening in Holly's Lexus and the hitch hauler to pick up the DR350.

The two pieces of icing on the cake were that the bike had been sold three or four times but the deals fell through (financing issues, most likely). Then as the guy was filling out the paperwork he laughed. The previous owner's name was "Geoffrey." Don't know what those odds are but they aren't high!

Re: This ain't no XJ...

Well my other ride, and my primary commuter rig (from South Torrance to DTLA) until last Tuesday was a 1990 Suzuki DR350 so I know all about low budget. I’ll be keeping the mighty DR for more technical trail use. Maybe now I’ll habe the time to rebuild it. 13,000 miles of commuting at 70mph took its toll.

I had a 97 DR350se for a few years. Loved thag bike but certainly wasnt fun commuting to work on it. I stuck to backroads and side streets typically when taking it to work.

Freeway all the way for me! I geared it up from the stock gearing so I could hold 70 mph without feeling like I was beating it up too badly. That took it from 7000 rpm to 6200 rpm at speed but I was still at about 7/8 full throttle at cruise.

The top speed I ever took it on my street gears and wheels was 80 mph. That wasn't trying to see how fast it would go so much as just being on the gas more than usual.
