Is there a stronger (larger) outer universal that fits the stock front axles? If so what is the part number, or vehicle that it comes off of?

what year is your jeep? does it have ABS?

XJ front Dana 30 axles came with either 260 or 297 series Spicer u-joints.

All ABS equipped XJs came with 297 series u-joints.

XJs through sometime around 95 or 96 came with 260 u-joints. After that, they came with 297s.

The 297 was originally for a Dana 44 and is rather stronger than a 260. In the last couple of years, Spicer has been selling 760 u-joints which are dimensionally identical to a 297 but supposed to be stronger still.

There's a few ways to tell if you have ABS: take it out, get it rolling and stand on the brakes (the ABS will kick in after the wheels lockup assuming it's working.) You can also look under the hood for the extra ABS equipment around the vacuum booster and master cylinder. Or, look for the ABS tone rings and sensors in the front knuckles.

The simplest way to tell is to measure the bearing cap diameter, but I don't remember what the cap diameters are for each.

Back to your original question: maybe, maybe not. If you've got the smaller 260 u-joints, you'll need to replace your axle shafts. If you've already got the 297s, then you've got other alternatives besides Spicer. You can go all the way to CTMs, or look into the Ox joints or Superiors.

You can tell if you have ABS by the ABS light coming on in the dash at start up, just like all the rest of the warning lights. :)

260x caps are 1 1/16" dia and 297x caps are 1 3/16" dia.
