P0700 & P0705 error codes

My brother is trying to get his 98 XJ inspected and they won't do it because it is showing a couple of error codes. The codes are P0700 and P0705 which are transmission control system and range sensor (PRNDL) malfunctions. Has anyone fixed these before ? if so what was the problem ? Could the infamous dirty shift position indicator switch be the problem ?
Thanks,
Dave
