Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

So with SoCal Fest 2 weeks away it is time to get cracking. I finally have a few day to work on it as I am waiting on suppliers to get me stuff for my orders, so it is trailer time.

I got the wood for the sides and floor today and got the garage setup for a productive day tomorrow.

I then put the design into cad to save time on the cutting of the wood, the top will fold up like a VW Vanagon.

Should have more photos tomorrow, I seem to work quick with wood so we will see.

Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

Made a little progress tonight after my UPS pickup.
Got the door cut and the lower rear panel in.

Looking really good Max! How thick is the Plywood that you're using?

Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

it is 3/8 for the walls and 5/8 for the floor. I then have 1x2 wood "studs" and it will be insulated and have a thin veneer on the inside.

I am going to put some steel tubing on the side walls for additional support since the roof is not going to be attached to it.

Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

Made a lot of progress this afternoon.

I got the back finished up. Cut the roof profile and got the studs in. I also got the door framed.

Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

Thanks, I am getting excited!

Went to HD tonight and bought two piano hinges one for the door and one for the roof, also got some indoor / outdoor carpet for the floor.

Little sketch on how I see the seal working on the pop top.

You might want to use a double layer of overlapping door seal type rubber (the kinda D shaped hollow rubber that compresses. Have one layer next to the angle on top and the other layer to the right of that but slightly overlapping, follow? That way you can cinch it down tight and then water has to get around both the angle and two layers of compressed rubber that forms a path like this: (Outside)__O/O¯¯(Inside)

Re: Dirt Bound Offroad Trailer - Build Log

A productive day today, met with Garret this morning and we worked out a good floor plan. It also involves making the back wall fold down into the bed to allow more standing room.

The main idea for this trailer is to have kitchen inside.

The seal i got was for a truck camper shell, about 1" wide and 1/4" thick. It should be good for next weeks run.
