Whining Noise??????

NAXJA Forum User
I started the old xj and it started to whine! The noise is located in the tensioner/waterpump/fan clutch area.
Unfortunately I cannot confirm with out the engine being on, and it is dangerous in there!
The noise changes in sound when the accelerator is applied.
Anyone have any defined ways to know for sure with out replacing the whole jeep???????

Don't forget the idler pulley bearing.

That was my first guess. If you have a length of hose, you can use it as a stethoscope to listen near the pulley (safer than a long screwdriver). You could also pull the serp belt and give things a spin.

I had what was more of a squeak. Turns out the frontmost pushrod wasnt getting any ooil to the lifter. A fast way to see if it is even in your belt drive system is to just yank off the belt then see if it goes away or not.
