XJ Grinding Noise - can't diagnose. (new info)

motor mounts
transmission mount
exhaust mounts
disk brake dust shields
fan shroud

Never did see if you posted a year but the new brakes reminds that there is a difference in height between older and newer rotors and they get mixed up at parts stores sometimes, might take a close look at the rotors again and see if they are rubbing somewhere.
 
another thing to look at is to make sure your exhaust is not rubbing your

trans cross member i had a hell of a grinding type noise in my 97 on startup

and when backing up or turning sounded like the flywheel was grinding on the bell housing turned out to be my exhaust hitting my x member on the right side just in front of the cat

5 minutes under my rig with a prybar and problem solved :D:D

just a thought
