Whining Noise??????

I started the old xj and it started to whine! The noise is located in the tensioner/waterpump/fan clutch area.
Unfortunately I cannot confirm with out the engine being on, and it is dangerous in there!
The noise changes in sound when the accelerator is applied.
Anyone have any defined ways to know for sure with out replacing the whole jeep???????

Re: Whining Noise??????

You could take the fan off, put the bolts back on to hold the pulley on, and see if the noise goes away. If it did, it's your fan clutch.

That is what I thought too.......the belt that is?
I sprayed something on it to lube it, but it remained.
I will try the fan thing

That was my first guess. If you have a length of hose, you can use it as a stethoscope to listen near the pulley (safer than a long screwdriver). You could also pull the serp belt and give things a spin.

Re: Whining Noise??????

I had what was more of a squeak. Turns out the frontmost pushrod wasnt getting any ooil to the lifter. A fast way to see if it is even in your belt drive system is to just yank off the belt then see if it goes away or not.
