You'll find that the "filter" is just a screen/strainer - I probably drop my pan every third change now, and check the sump/clean the magnet. Having the drain plug makes everything easy - although I'm thinking about adding inline filters one of these days.
The AW4 generally requires four quarts (1 gallon) for a "service fill" - or a drain and fill. Pour in three, and let it settle for a couple minutes. Start the engine, and make sure it reaches the "cold" mark on the dipstick. You'll likley need the fourth bottle.
I seem to recall you'll need about two quarts - plus or minus - to refill the transfer case.
