ok People I need your help with a brake question.
I have a 92 XJ I6 4X4 Sport, did this jeep come standard with ABS or how do I check to see if ABS is on the jeep. The reason I ask is that my brake have gone and I will be rebuildiing the brakes starting with the Master Cylinder. Any suggestions would help greatly

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that an ABS computer can be found under the rear seat if your XJ has it.

On a 92, you'll have a large bulb reservoir near the master cylinder for the ABS. You can also check to see if you've got sensors at each wheel (to detect lockup.) Your front axles will also have tone rings on the outer shafts.

You can also send your VIN into D/C (available through http://www.jeep.com supposedly) and get the build sheet.

Brakes

Also if I not mistaken, there should be another valve that looks like a proportioning valve some where near the master cylinder

If your '92 has ABS it will be the Bendix system. You'll need to replace the booster, master cylinder, proportioning valve and the hard lines. I’ve been told that a booster/ Master cylinder from a ’96 is the easiest to modify to fit.

Pedal Rod

I've never had to replace thepedal rod as far as I know that is part of the brake booster. Some are adjustable, that I know. You try doing a search and find anything?
Anybody here ever have to do this..........

Ok here is another newbie question for the group. Is there a way to check to see if you have 9 inch brakes or 10 inches brakes beside taking the rear brakes apart. I have found a nice river of brake fluid coming out of my driverside rear brake and planning to rebuild and replace most parts but I need to know what to purchase before disassembling

ok guys, two valuable links:

As far as I know, the bendix 9 (or 10) system was last used in the 1991 model. However, as with my vehicle, some 1991 models were actually delivered in 1992. The new 1992 model was equipped as option (as far as I know) with the Teves system.

From the information above, it should become clear what type of ABS you have, if any.

If you do have the bendix 9 or 10 system, be aware that this was subject to a recall (#702) under which both the master cylinder and abs pump/motor assembly have lifetime guarantee.

10" brakes are pretty uncommon on XJs, and the 10" drums have some pretty good sized cooling fins. The 9" drums are by far the most common, and have a smooth outside.

You can also pull a rim off, and check what the max safe diameter is (it's cast in the drum on the face, near the outer edge.
