Burning smell from a/c ?

I'm on my way home (30 minutes trip) with the AC on, get off the E-way, the a/c starts blowing a LOT colder, then a burning smell- I turn everything off, start to hear this noise I haven't heard before-low, almost a hollow sound? . I get home and the smell is concentrated on the bottle do-hickey near the firewall..

WTF??? Help! am I going to die? Is this easily replaced? I can do my own work, I just need to know if it's okay to drive until I can fix it!

This is my DD by the way...I would need it for work on Monday!

Clutch bearing gone and the compressor is staying engaged when it shouldn't?

I popped the hood and that "hollow" sound was coming from the compressor..



Sunofabi.... Now I get to spend my Saturday running around looking for one at a junkyard....anyone know what I can reasonable expect to pay at a salvage place?
