crank sensor help?

can someone tell me how hard and how to change a crank sensor? took it to the shop because it would not start every once in awhile of course it started every time for them so they said they dont know what the problem is. so this weekend we were out garage saleing and it wouldnt start again this time we had to have it towed and soon as they dropped it off the tow truck it started right up they kept it a couple of days and told me it could be either the crank sensor or the distributor that it would cost me $400 to replace both! so if there is any help yall can give me i sure would appreciate it thanks again john oh yea its a 99 with 4.0 automatic trans

You have an automatic trans? Have you tried starting in N when it wont start?

Do a search on Neutral Safety Switch, a simple cleaning will fix this issue.

Typically periodic no starts are not the CPS.

it turns over could it still be the neutrl safty switch?

If it turns over...no, wont be the NSS.

Heres a link on the CPS for ya. A new CPS will run you about $65 from the parts store. It can be a PITA to swap, but doable in an hour or two.
