break away bosses on steering column support

I need to attach my steering column to my cage and came across these(see photos below)
Just wondering what the deal is with these little break-away bosses on the steering column support, they seem like they are meant to break away, I just can't really see how these breaking away in a collision would really do anything substantial as the column is also attached at the firewall with 4 fasteners.
