I broke my NP231 front output... Options?

Which affirms what I already knew - I'm as hard on my front wheel driving assemblies as I am on the rear.

So, I need a HD output. Or something. What are the options?

Does the wide chain/6-pinion NP231C have a stronger front output?

How about the NP241? D or C variants, I guess. I 'think' I can reuse my HD SYE in one, but I'm really not sure.

What does the aftermarket offer?

And if I have the stupid thing apart again I want to do a 2-low, what's the best deal?

If you get a 241OR (Jeep Rubicon) 4:1, and it has a 32 spline front and rear output. I have one in my jeep, I am running two front yokes one in the front, and one on the rear, the factory puts a damper/flat yoke on the rear. However, the yokes are 1330's. so i had a few driveshaft issues, nothing major, other than that is was a strait swap. I have a few pics if you want them.

But at the price of the 241 you could buy an Atlas

$1600.00 I know it's alot, but it fits without having to cut the floor for the twin sticks

I've never heard of a front output breaking. What were you doing when it broke? Where exactly did it break? Any other broken parts?

Me either and I thought I had seen every possible kind of abuse....:smoker:

You guys are easy on things. Or the rest of your drivetran sucks?

Ass end in the air doing nadda, all the weight on the belly and the front tires pulling myself over a rock. Uphill.

If you can break a stock rear output on the trail (seen it done more than once), you can break the front just as easy if only the front tires are doing anything.

And it just sheared the shaft just before the splines.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing you had some weight on the rear end of the front driveshaft. Or maybe it was just too much torque for the output shaft.

There was no weight on the driveshaft. Or it would have been scarred (it was 'brand' new, so I could tell).

There is a chance that it had previously been damaged, but I had the case apart only about 5 days ago and inspected everything. Nothing failed the visual/wiggle test.

Sounds like just a good old case of bieng to hardcore lol

That really sucks, I always figured the chain would go first.

If you can't score a case cheap, PM me. I probably have all the parts you need in my spares pile.

Thanks old_man, but I have a buddy with a ba10/5 and 231 that he'll give me for free. So I'd have enough parts.

But I'd like to upgrade it if I can. I'm going to go look at a NP241 D or C tomorrow hopefully.

How involved is that build? I like to think I am fairly mechanically inclined and have no problems tearing engines down and building them up fine... Tho I only took my 231 far enough apart to replace the SYE... how difficult is it to rebuild?

A NP208J I believe has 32 spline outputs front and rear. It also has the wide chain and fixed yokes. The only drawback is the 2.61 to 1 lowrange. But you could use your broken 231 as a underdrive/doubler.

I'm trying to find out more info on the NP208J for myself right now. It look like a spacer/clocking ring might be needed for an AW-4.

If anyone has any info about the NP208J post it up. I can buy them for the price of a HD231 SYE kit, so with a quick rebuild it would work great for me and be stronger. I will also clock it up for better ground clearance.
