Charginge cable upgrade question... shroud surrounding cable on alternator?

I am in the middle of upgrading my battery cables and charging cable. The alternator has a shroud to protect the connection where the wire bolts into the alternator. I picked up a 2ga cable to upgrade with, it is a little bit too wide to between the opening in the shroud.

Is it possible to remove this cover? This is on a '96 XJ. The alternator on my '90 XJ does not have one of these.

Thanks

i did the same on my 96, i just gently persuaded..{broke} the shroud off of the one side. channel locks works best, because of the angle.

I did the upgrade on my 96 and had a similar issue.
I took my Dremel tool and "opened" up the area to allow it to fit.
Took some time, but I like to do things as original as possible.

can't hurt to apply some liquid electrical insulation to compensate for the lack of shroud. Home Depot and West Marine has the stuff.

You'll be amazed where else you can waterproof connections.

On my 97 I was able to take it off. It just unbolts off the terminal.
I then used the dremal and opened it up .
