1990 AW4 242 transfer case - 1990 5sp 231J transfer case input gears.....

Yes I've searched. Came up with a lot of convoluted information.

Question: Do the input gears need to be changed to put a 5sp 231 transfer case behind a AW4 transmission? Is there a difference between the manual and automatics transmissions input gears?

Both cases are out of 1990 XJ's. Confident that they're both 21 spline input gears.

Any info would be appreaciated.

and don't sweat it too much, because the input shafts are interchangable from 242 to 231: http://www.hobbyguild.com/jeep/index.html

So worst case scenario, you will be opening up both cases to swap the input shafts.
