ok I keep bringing the tool chest with me.. I know that I will never need SOME of it but I might need alot of it.

I searched and found some threads with trail supplies but is there a comprhensive tools needed list for a stock XJ?

This may also help some of the guys starting out buying tools as well.

a few I know off the top of my head
9/16th's stubby wrench for t-case removal
13mm deep socket
15mm socket
10mm socket

Big F^cking Hammer
Pry bar or BIG screwdriver

If this has been covered point me in the thread direction please...

the 32mm socket for removing the stock hubbearing units
1 1/8" socket for Pinion Nut's
13/16" for LCA's

I always bring my Dana 44 hub tool since I have 2 of them, sad part is I dont run a D44 in this rig. Always a bright idea to bring tho. I bring

-assortment of fuses
-pb blaster
-hammer
-tape (measuring)
-standard and metric stubby ratchet wrenches
- " and " box end wrenches
-socket set
-needle nose
-screwdriver (6in1)
-large pipe wrench
-2 channel locks
-2 crecent wrenches
-tire plugs
-brake fluid

a bunch of other crap.... all fits into a nice small box. Have another box that stays at site (large rubbermaid tub)

All good tools to have but not what I call trail tools.

Trail tools
1: FULL size spare.
2: high boy jack.
3: flash light
4: 4 way
5: duct tape (lots of it)
6: 4X4 plywood (don't even leave home without this)
7 A few common wrenches and screw drivers, etc.
8: A come-a-long if you off alone.
9: A BFH
10 A bigger FH
11 cell or CB
12 tow straps
13 BEER

I am trying to get away from bring my full socket set and standard/Metric wrenches...I know I dont use over half of them..Plus you add deep sockets and 1/2" and 3/8" drives and we are talking alot of tools....

12 point 13mm socket to remove the hub units and a pickle fork

I can't believe nobody mentioned bottled water and oil!

You dont need a pickle fork......
Just hit the tie rod joint on the side with a BFH it will pop right out (not the actual tie rod the other female side) ...No damage to anything...

definatly yes to the 12 point 13mm though...

Go around your truck and see what are the most common sizes. Then only bring the deep well ones, and bring the 1/2 to 3/8 adapter and wobblie. You dont really have to bring all of them, but then again i bring "incase" stuff. This is the reason for my tote that stays at camp.

It is possible to not need a pickle fork, but with breakage (such as gear box shearing off the frame) a pickle fork makes the job alot easier.

I've wheeled with one guy that always had a rechargable impact. That was also not mandatory, but made things go alot quicker.

Rachet strap. And not those stupid "cam-buckle" ones. At least 2 straps, and preferably one without the hooks (comes in handy for putting the trac-bar back in the frame bracket after you bust it on a rock). Oh, and a lug wrench for that nice full size spare tire. If your spare is on a different wheel thanyou r normal tires, make sure that you have the right lugnuts for that spare (duh).
The hub socket is 36 MM.

For 96 up, a 15 mm ratcheting box wrench (e.g. Gearench, etc.) for the serpentine belt adjustment.

1/4 inch drive flex handle and 8 mm socket, or a 6 point 8 mm box end wrench, for u-joint straps.

A stout 18 mm. socket and a matching open/box wrench. Some sets still don't come with 18. A messed up wheel lug becomes 18 if you peel off the chrome cap.

A brake adjusting tool. A screwdriver works, but one with a little broader tip and a bent end works better.

Perfect guys keep them comming, I will consolidate the list in a week or so...

Good point on the pickle fork. I hadnt thought of that and I know someone who did just rip the gear box off the frame

Also just want to mention although $$$$$$ snapon tools are much lighter then others. I have not taken the plunge but if wieght is an issue its something to think about.

Good thread!

I thought about this myself each time I pack for a ride my mind goes blank as to what tools I need. It would be nice to compile a "Tool Checklist" to go over each time out.

I would add (3) 1' extensions(or 1 long extension) and a 11mm swivel socket for the CPS.

Good list lobsterdmb!

I carry a 1 gallon garden sprayer filled with water. It works like a mini pressure washer. Great for clearing mud from windows, mirrors, valve stems, etc. Also works to clear mud from your radiator fins before it turns to concrete.
