Drum Brake Question - Parking Brake Cable Removal From Parking Brake Lever?

I am replacing the rear drums and shoes of my 2000 XJ for the first time. I have one side disassembled and am getting ready to put this puzzle back together. When I disassembled I noticed the parking brake cable is fairly well attached to the parking brake lever (lever inside the drum assembly, not inside the vehicle). Is it necessary to remove the lever from the cable? I tried to separate the lever from the cable but it seems to be on there pretty tight so I stopped to avoid breaking something.

little trick a buddy taught me....use a pair of needle-nose vise grips. Get the tips under the spring and push it back, then lock them on the cable. Then you can slip the barrel-end out of the notch in the lever.

I hate drum brakes....
