Steering box issues

40k miles of pushing 33s seems to have finally taken its toll on my steering box. I was chasing down a creaking noise in the front, and figured out the box was making the noise. The output shaft (where the pitman attaches) has about 1/8" of play in it when turning the wheel at a stop, making a creaking noise until the shaft engages enough to turn the pitman. I am running a Waggy pitman with my OTK setup, so I imagine the extra leverage finally killed it.

Is this something that can be resolved with a rebuild, or would it be more worthwhile to swap boxes out with a Durango box or PSC?

Re: Steering box issues

I would upgrade it if you got to replace it. With a Durango, YJ, or an aftermarket box. My .02.

Re: Steering box issues

Yeah, that's the way I'm leaning too. It just takes $$.

Re: Steering box issues

Seems to me there is an adjustment for that. Not sure on the exact procedure, but it involves the nut and set screw on he top of the box.
