Black is most always a ground, in American cars. Red is often a hot wire. With a stripe, is often switched current or a control circuit.
 
In my '96, the white wire was (+) and black (-). This was consistent with the flex-a-lite fan I installed that used the same color scheme. In some fans, if you reverse the wiring, the fan spins the opposite direction. That's another way to tell.
