1976 CJ5 Project

I think it is worth noting that you started this project in July and then got slowed down by a leg injury, yet you still managed to disassemble, rebuild and reassemble this Jeep in about 4 months. That is impressive.

Nice work.

Now, what's next?

Maybe something British?
Now is fixing all the little things i missed or didnt properly assemble along the way haha. I figure it will continue to be a smaller project for the forseeable future.

Example. Sounds like ive got a pretty bad exhaust leak when under load. Been trying to locate with no luck. Tcase linkage is pretty worn and while it shifted fine on the bench I dont think its getting the shift shaft all the way to the 4 low detent due to wear.

Rollbar and bumperettes on, adjusted the idle screws on the carb, found out I assembled the power steering pump wrong so fixed that, and used one of my original cammie blouses to make a set of chain sleeves.

I would say that is less about you mssing details and more about the vehicle being a Jeep.

Figured out the 4 Low issue was being caused by the boot being pinched between the shifter and the inspection cover. Fixed that up by moving the boot further up the shifter.

Day before yesterday I had to reseal the exhaust headers and used some permatex ultra copper this go round. I had 3 leaks per bank with the dry Fel Pro gasket. I went with a differet felpro gasket his time and used the ultra copper and it seems to have fixed my leaks. I also took it into town and got it inspected and road legal which is when I noticed how bad the exhaust leaks were.

Yesterday Now that the CJ5 is into road legal running shape I took the kids out on a loop of some dirt roads. The wife opted out for now lol. They also wanted to go camping and we weren't able to make it up to Oklahoma/Arkansas for the weekend so we took them to the back of the property to go camping for the night. The oldest wanted to drive her Jeep. I'm going to have to add some self tapping screws to it's "tires" for traction purposes. So we putted into the back field in low range 1st gear.

Next on the list is a new fuel level sender, I didn't realize that the old pickup needed a "sock" filter so I can't pull the last 3 to 5 gallons out of the thank and the old sender isn't working right. Not looking forward to dropping the tank. I may put that off till later this week. I've also got most of the parts I need to rebuild the suspension back to a factory format on the way as well.

Dropped the tank and got the new sender in. All working now. Until I figure out how accuate it is I'll continue to carry 5 extra gallons with me.

Day before yesterday, I got the emblems put back on and got a 12v/usb outlet put in the dash along with a mount for my phone/nav device. Yesterday I pulled the lift shackles off the front and put new stock shackles back on. Then pulled whatever heavy duty springs they had in the back and installed some Crown standard duty rear leaves. I may replace the front leaves in the near future with new just because.

Since the previous owners hacked up the stock radio spot I decided to just shove one of my commercial Motorolas in there. Need to get a trim ring made up for it.

Ammo can center console in the CJ to replace the cheaply made low buck thing that was in there before. The old one locked but was made out of particle board and vinyl so would have been easy to break into, and the previous owners were fishers I guess cause it was full of old lures and used hooks. It was also too low to work as an arm rest. Still on the fence on if I should paint it or leave it. Pretty sure I'm going to upholster at least part of the lid and add a basic cupholder or set of cupholders.

Pretty sure this was the old unit that was in there but in vinyl instead of denim.

Do you have any recent updates with this build?
Pretty much just been driving it and enjoying it. Little stuff here and there. Trying to get miles on it to build trust in it to take it up to Oklahoma and Arkansas for camping trips.

This is indeed a successful build. It seems like these kids are happy going being the passenger of this classic jeep.
