Hey All,

- XJ was running fine
- XJ developed chirping noise
- Noise disappeared for 2 months after road trip, then reappeared
- Belt is tight tight (have tried various tensions)
- All pulleys turn fine by hand - no weird grinding.
- Happens at all RPM's
- Replaced idler pulley
- Replaced belt + harmonic balancer, sound returned after 5 min of driving
- Can spray water on grooved site to cut sound down to a whir
- I cant tell if anything is out of alignment, but how could it be if it was running fine and then developed chirp?
- Temp does rise on slow climbs

Does anyone have any ideas on how to figure this out without just throwing money at it?

Check the back side of the water pump pulley. There have been cases of it rubbing on the pump housing on new ones.

Or power steering pump. I chased a chirp for years on my xj, then swapped the power steering pump from my wifes zj and bingo chirp gone.

Figured it out. Crank walk. Moves forward 1/8" and throws everything out of alignment.

Not good that is how my last Dodge 1978 V-8 died at about 400,000 miles. The early warning was repeated sudden death leaks of Tranny fluid at the TC seal. The banging and knocking from hell. But by then it was 1/4" of out. Crank shaft Trust bearing is shot.
