I'm searching for a tire carrier and since I have all this info assembled, I thought I'd share it.

These are all the aftermarket tire carriers I can find for the XJ. If you know of one I'm missing, please let me know.

Price shown is just the price on their website and does not include shipping or optional add-ons.

I'm leaning toward the AJ's Armor.

If i didnt already have a slick custom tube swingout to go on my rig, I think I would do the Softcore or AJ's only because I want the cut and fold.

I am currently building a tire/ gas can carrier that will use existing trailer hitch. I should be in it around $100 using parts that readily available. It should be done later this week and I will post pictures then.

I guess Detours USA is temporarily closed for reorganization and relocation.

Bummer.

I liked their concept.

Detours has been "temporarily closed" since about this time last year. They do have a Facebook page, but I wouldn't expect to see anything from them any time soon.

THIS is the route I went, and it indeed did end-up only costing about $100 all told. Mine comes out of the main hitch tube itself though so I still have a usable receiver point to tow and/or pull with.

will be doing the same. was thinking swing-out with axle spindle variety but look forward to see what you guys do with hitch mount.

dropping back or to the side? I'll have 37s in the near future so still leaning pretty hard toward swing-out

I'm not a huge fan of tire carrier's for a few reasons, hatch accessibility and ground clearance are my two biggest issues with them. I needed something for the occasional trip where I need more room in the jeep and a place to mount Jerry cans, so I built a hitch mounted one that's easily removable

Which is why I love my RigidCo rear carrier. I don’t know that he makes them anymore but the spare is very high and angled to match the hatch. But I do miss the visibility and less weight of not having 100lbs hanging on my rear bumper.

Detours USA has their Knucklebone $285. Looks like a good budget option (IMHO tire carriers are overpriced). It is a hitch mounted option as well, however they also have a hard mount option that mounts to the hitch crossbar instead of the receiver for an additional $40. Their website is offline, but their Facebook Page has more info:

Sorry about that chaps, I tried posting pics earlier and they didn't quite come through...

The entire setup ended-up costing about $100 all told, including all materials (mostly scrap and bearings, bolts, etc.)... it just slides into the hitch tube, and I've put a through bolt with a locknut on it to secure it. Very stout, minimal blockage to rearview visibility, and doesn't obstruct the signals or license plate.
