Hey guys,
I’ve searched and tackled all of the common issues but I’m stumped so I’m here for help or ideas. I have a 2000 Cherokee sport 4.0 with an auto I’m having a no crank issue. Occasionally once every 20th try or so it’ll crank for a split second then stop. So far I’ve cleaned all the grounds, tried a known good battery, replaced the starter, checked all relays in PDM, checked all of the fuse box fuses, replaced the ignition switch and checked the ignition switch pin and no luck the thing just will not crank. I’m at a loss on what to do, any ideas?

I checked all of the grounds and I’ve tried the starting in neutral trick with no luck. My friend owned the car before me and he replaced the neutral safety switch before I bought the car a year and a half ago

Does the starter make a click sound when you try to start it?

I had a motorhome that did this an i found out it was a bad cable going to the start.

Start with the basics. Voltage drop power and ground circuits, verify whether or not you have power with a test light on the solenoid wire. Does the check engine light come on? If you don't know how to do a voltage drop Google it and post the results.

Quick question - do the reverse lights work properly? They're controlled by the neutral safety switch and often the first symptom of NSS issues. It could also be misadjusted.

Can you get a second person to hold a test light to the solenoid wiring while you turn the key? The idea being to see if you get current to the solenoid.

Its best to work backwards from the starter. Put a multimeter on 20v DC and check for voltage on the center pin of the starter solenoid (ground to starter body) while a helper turns the key. If you get voltage then the problem is with the starter solenoid or motor. Otherwise check upstream to the relay. If you get nothing on the starter relay circuit, then something on that circuit is wrong. You can work your way all the way back to the ignition switch if you can find a diagram for the circuit.

I had the same problem with my 2000XJ. I did a quick check by attaching a jumper cable from the negative battery terminal( i.e. ground) to the case of the starter. It fired right up. That indicated a bad ground. Then I made up a separate ground cable(i.e. welding cable) for the starter. I attached this grounding cable to the battery negative terminal and to a starter mounting bolt.

Best regards,

CJR

So turns out it was the NSS which was out of adjustment. I couldn’t get it just right so pulled it out to clean it. Once I pulled the case apart I noticed one of the screw hole/tabs was broken, should I buy a new NSS or just put it back in? I don’t really want to spend $200+

It will work without that corner screw, just dab some RTV on the good half there

But I would get another eventually

My thought as well.
