Anyone have any tips on how the hell to get the shift fork retainer pin out? My manual calls for a #1 extractor, but I don't know what one is let alone where to get one...

I think they mean one of these, NAPA has them...

I beleive you are correct.
I would like to add that there is another style that has LH spirals.
I think that the spiral type might grip the pin a little better.
