Removing metal windshield trim

I've done the search, but I can't seem to find how to carefully remove the metal trim from the windshield: I see it's held in by clips, so do you just push the stops back from the clips, or does it prise out some other way? I'd like to do it as carefully as possible, as I want to see if the leak causing the footwell puddle is due to rust up against the windshield, fix the problem and put it all back together without parting with more cash. Also, any tips for stopping small rust spots from increasing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The clips are stronger than they look.

There is a tool for this, but you can use/make an 'L' shaped tool.
