Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
Aluminum conducts heat faster than cast iron. This helps cool the engine and allows a higher compression ratio with less risk of preignition or detonation, it also weighs about 30lbs less than the iron one. The Edelbrock aluminum head specifically also has a re-designed "modern" combustion chamber, which according to them is more efficient.

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
A little bit of progress today. I hadn't gotten a crank girdle, so I had to go grab one as well as washers and bolts. To space the girdle out enough so it doesn't hit the rods I grabbed 14 -3/8' - thick grade 8 washers (.120 washers). I first tried the thinner .060 ones but they were too close.
![]() Installed the girdle with thick 3/8 grade 8 washers and 3/8 nuts. ![]() I also installed ARP studs and nuts and my Harland Sharp roller rockers. I used ARP-200-2403 for the studs but the nuts they come with are too big for the roller rockers. You need 12- 12 point 5/16 nuts as well. I used ARP -67851B ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't have a woodruff key that fits my crank and harmonic balancer, so I am on pause till I get one that works. |

You better get some studs for the valve cover too. The rest is coming along and looking good.

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
BTW, what are you doing for a valve cover? I modified a stocker at first and then bought the Crown aluminum one. The Crown is nice when I got done fitting all the holes as every one was about a 1/8" off!

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
Did you check your lifter pre-load? I originally had to shim my HS rockers, later I purchased some new 3/8" chromoly pushrods in the correct length. The new pushrods also got rid of a little clatter in the valve train.

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
As I also live in California I am curious if this engine when complete will pass an emissions test or is this "off road only".

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
It will pass emissions. They pass the smog test, and visually it looks exactly the same as the 4.0.

Any progress on your build? Curious to see how things progress and ultimately you before and after tune numbers.

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
The engine is in, and I have been driving it around. I have only about 100 miles on it right now. I am still waiting to get it tuned. When I re-installed it I put on the ZJ fan clutch, which is loud as hell and I think is robbing some power. I'll post pics and numbers once I get it in and tuned!

Re: Started my 4.7 Stroker build today.
I got the XJ with the stroker on the Dyno yesterday to do some tuning. First thing we found out was that my fuel pump wasn’t working up to par, so even with the injectors at 100%, it was leaning out. Next task is installing a new fuel pump! We were not able to really bump timing because of the lean condition, but we did get some data. Best run with the old engine was 147hp, best run with the Stroker with the limitations was 212hp. Some interesting tidbits, we found that we gained 5hp with the bbk 62mm throttle body over the stock throttle body. We tested both with the THOR intake attached and disconnected and lost power with the intake disconnected. Once I get the fuel pump swapped out we can get back to tuning. Right now I am also running the ZJ fan clutch, so next time I am gong to test ZJ fan clutch vs stock fan clutch to see if there is really a substantial measurable power loss.
