I am changing my front axle shaft u-joints and i was wondering if i need to remove the shift fork from the front axle diconect in order to remove the passenger side axle shaft?

I have a 90 xj 4X4 4.0L auto trans.

Nope.

You will have to pull the disco motor off the housing... there is a splined collar that the shift fork slides back & forth... it'll probably get loose when you pull that shaft, and will need to be reset (3rd hand?) when you reassemble.

Add a bit more gearlube to replace what spills out from the disco housing.

I did an 87 a couple of times and it didn't fall apart. You can certainly get the old axle out without touching the disconnect, and there's at least a chance you can get it back in, if the collar stays on the fork.
