Just like to be prepared and can't find any write-ups on here or google that help me... Im just trying to see what all tools I would need..

What I have:
Warn Premium Hubs PN 20990

What do I need:

snap ring pliers?
needle nose pliers/vise grips?
magnet tool?
hub socket (but what size?)

Thanks,
Chris

Also, should I carry anything spare on the trail? Hubs go for about 80.00 or what should I carry w/ me?

What axle is this on? You should be able to get the axle socked for a D44 (very common). Snap rings and tiny needle nose are good. magnet also. you could carry a spare hub, or a drive flange. If you bust a hub, just throw a drive flange on there.

Hub spanner/socket is the only "special" tool youl need although you cant go wrong with a bearing packing tool!

That's what I needed to know.. so it's a generic hub spanner socket... no specific size or point?

Also, if there a bearing packer you like best?? or is a bearing packer a bearing packer...

Thanks,

Go to Napa and tell them you need a spindle nut socket for a Dana 44. There should be one sitting on the shelf along with all the other tools they have behind the counter. There is a snap ring on the end of axle shaft, then a larger ring that holds the body of the locking hub in the wheel hub. It just gets pried out with a small screwdriver. If you dont have an axle nut socket, you can always use the ghetto redneck way and hammer it on or off with a punch. Thats pretty much it.

You need snap ring pliers, one or two dental picks, needle nose pliers, and a four prong D44 axle/spindle nut socket. The small snap ring on the end of the stub shaft is removed with the snap ring pliers. The large retaining ring located around the inside of the hub near the edge of the hub is hard to see and remove. I use a dental pick to lift one end of the ring out of the grove the grab it with needle nose pliers and remove it. Then use the 4 prong D44 axle nut socket to remove the locknut, then pull out the locking washer, next use the same socket to remove the axle nut. Then you can remove the outer wheel bearing. Lastly, you can yank the hub/rotor assembly off of the spindle.

The D30 MileMarker lockout hub conversion kit include the D44 socket in the kit. Just realized this and I've installed six of these kits. LOL.

Carry a couple of the hub end screws, (they tend to strip or get lost in the field), A Spare hub (complete) is easy to store and great insurance.

Complete rebuild of front Ford D44 (pretty much the same as Chevy/Jeep D44). http://ford.off-road.com/ford/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=198396

Reading the article I posted would do two things--It would walk you through the procedure, and in doing so, give big "hints" as to what tools you should carry, not only to remove hubs, but to R&R axles.

Using appropriate size (I have seen two different sizes) allen socket/wrench, remove six allen head bolts that hold hub in. Use rubber mallet to lightly tap hub on top until it comes off.

All three types have a large (same diameter as inside of hub) spring clip that holds the outer part of mechanism in. It is hard to see the ends of this clip, but once found, can be pried out with small screwdrivers.

Using snap ring tool, remove snap ring on axle shaft

Using hub bearing nut tool, remove outer hub bearing nut.

Using snap ring tool, remove locking alignment ring. Alignment ring has many

and relatively large hammer

Excerpts from article. I suggest you read it. Removing the Chevy/Jeep spindles/caliper mount is easier than removing the Ford stuff--but a hammer, or a spindle removal tool is required:
