I got my melling HVLP pressed together yesterday and went to toss the oil pan on this morning and something is hitting and not letting the pan lin up correctly.

Do i have to modify my oil pan to use the Melling in my 89 4.0?

Yes. The body of the high volume pump is bigger so you need to "massage" the oil pan with a ballpeen hammer to gain some clearance.
I'm planning to install the Melling high volume oil pump (MEL-M167HVS) on my stroker very soon and I've already anticipated the need for the oil pan "massage".

I must have gotten lucky 3 years ago then. I bought a high volume oil pump through AutoZone (don't even think about asking for a part number!) and I'm pretty sure it was a Melling HV.

It bolted in just fine, and between that and new bearings, my pressure soared.
