You should use a tool like factory recommended for my 1990 the tool is J-21549-3. there is a drawing of the tool in the factory XJ manual in the body section.

You should be able to fabricate a tool from a strip of thin sheet steel. Use the above links to get the shape down. basically some bends and grind away a hook on the end. Make a handle by winding thick duct tape around it.
or grind a hook on a inch inch wide putty knife The putty knife should be thin enough, and stiff enough to work fine, a dremel, file or grinder can cut the hook needed to get behind the trim clips. putty knifes are a buck or two each at ACE, and the already have a handle!
