So i thought that i lost 2nd a month ago. We swapped transmissions and that didn't solve the issue. So in reading i saw about swapping the tcm. So I did that. Also adjusted the TV cable like was shown. Shifts 1 & 2 but 3rd & 4th dont shift out until 4500 or more rpms. Ive read here that it might be the tps. I ordered one last night. Can anyone give me any other hints to check.

1990 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 4.0 Renix aw4

TPS would have been the first thing to test if it's not shifting at the rpms you expect. The transmission itself and computer are very rarely the problem. The TPS is a very common problem (often caused by pressure washing), followed by failing solenoids in the transmission which are easy to replace in-vehicle. On the older Renix Jeeps, it's the square connector on the TPS that provides the signal to the trans computer. The flat one provides a signal to the engine computer. On the Renix Jeeps, the sensor has slotted holes and you need to adjust it when installing.

Read through all of Cruiser54s tips. He has plenty of great advice on the older Jeeps, in particular fixing the ground connections.

I would begin completing Tips 1,3,4, and 5 FIRST.
Then, check the TPS as described in another Tip.
