Optional way to reset ECU??

Every couple years a gremlin in my 96 XJ gets pissed and gives me a misfire code on #3 and #4. Code 43 43 when I do the key trick.
I normally disconnect battery terminals, and touch cables together for 30 seconds and it resets the CEL for a few more years.
My positive connector is FUBAR and a PITA to get off.
Would disconnecting just the negative terminal for an hour do the same as touching the cables together? WOuld it reset things the same?
REALLY don't want to pry the + terminal off again if I don't have to. Yes, I'm getting new cables in summer.

No need to take both off the battery. Just take the negative off and touch it to the positive.

And clean up what ever is the mess that you've got!
