Can someone explain how the auto tensioner parts work?

You have the silver cable that connects to the lower lever that locks and I presume advances the toothed wheel.

When the E brake is pulled the silver cable looses slack but the lever doesn't engage the wheel.

I read conflicting posts about reversing and pulling the E brake vs jamming on the brake pedal to tighten the adjuster.

Has never worked for me even after everything was replaced. I always seem to be crawling under and doing it manually.

Would it work better if the E brake was under a little tension to take slack out of the silver cable? Then when you jam on the brake presumably it would lift up on the lever against the wheel harder?

Also can someone explain why reverse?

How does expanding the shoes in reverse change this mechanism?
