THE XJ Dana 44, ABS, How-to thread (56K beware)

4Speedfunk, to answer your Q's:

This is from a '99 Classic XJ with Dana 35.

-54 tooth count
-2.675" OD (+/- about .002", it would jump between 2.674 and 2.677)
-1.702" ID (probably supposed to be 1.700. It would jump between 1.700 and 1.704)
-Overall ring thickness of the ring ranges from .507" to .518", depending on where you measured. It would definitely be safe to call them .5" even for our project at hand.
-There's a little chamfer on one side of the ID of the ring. This measures 1.850", but I don't think it has any value to your application.

OP, you said you had the shafts machined to 1.895" for the tone ring seat. Any reason why you took it down so close to the seal surface diameter? That only leaves .010" on each side of the shaft. The step from the seal surface to the original cast surface looks pretty big. I would think you'd want to get it machined true, while leaving as much thickness there as possible. I threw some calipers on it, and it looked like 2.10"+/-. Taking down to 2.000 looks like it would be enough. I'll know next week when I take it in to the lathe.

It was not my intention at all to take them down so far. Unfortunately I was not the one doing the machining and I don't think my machinist was as careful as I would have been. My original D44 shafts got machined to 2.00" as I mentioned at the start of the write up and indicated in the first diagram. It was my Superior shafts that got machined down to 1.895" which was about .025" more than I was expecting (as I also commented on). The Superiors just don't have as much meat to work with as the stock shafts did. Needless to say, I was a little ticked he had taken so much off. I'm just glad he didn't go any further or he would have ruined them!

By all means, when you are machining them, take off just enough to get a flat surface to press the ring onto at that 1.7" from the bearing seat location. Good luck with the rest of your install!

Ah yes, After re-reading I now realize it was your Superior shafts. I'm going to start by taking them down to 2.050 and see how true the surface is. It's not like there's much stress put on these little rings, all they have to do it spin ;)

The less I can take off, the better. I'd rather not risk marring the seal seat, even though it'll be getting a sleeve. Thanks for the reply! Hope the axle is still performing great.

Well I've got some updates comin up on my 44. I ended up going with an explorer disc swap, and right now am working with a "setup tone ring" to get the sensor mounted. Basically a delrin cylinder the I machine to fit in the wheel bearing journal, and is the same diameter at the tone ring. I'll post some pics soon.

Looking forward to seeing what you have done!

Haven't forgotten you gents! So here's some axle porn to hold you over.

Xj Dana 44, xj tone rings, xj abs sensors, explorer backing plates and e-brake hardware, explorer calipers, brembo pads (not installed here) and ZJ rotors. Lots and lots of pics coming next week after she gets plumbed an installed.

10,000 curses upon Photobucket!!

:smsoap:

Wow, that sucks. Big time. Sorry fellas, not coughing up the $400 for a Plus500 account...

Damn, I put a lot of time into these write-ups both here and on other forums too...

Glad I used this thread and got my swap done while the thread was whole.

I would also like to see all the pics in this great thread. photobucket is dead, very bad action.

I think the best and safest way to host pics is to buy a cheap webhosting and have all the pics on own hosting account. the costs for base hosting plan are about 5,-$/year (for 250 GB transfer).

fyrfytr1717, if you have all the pics on your hdd, please upload them again. naxja admins can easily change the links. should work. I think.

Hello,

this is such a great write up, but it is so sad that the pics will not work.

Would be great to have a chance to the see the threat incl. pics.
Thanks Frank
