Archeological dig set for Holcomb Valley

By PE News on June 19, 2009 8:00 PM

An archeological study will begin next week of an 1860s mining camp in Holcomb Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.
"Students working with forest service archeologists will perform (a) survey and excavations for five weeks," forest service spokesman John Miller said in a written statement.
The field school is scheduled for June 22 through July 24 in Clapboard Town, one of three mining camps in Holcomb Valley north of Big Bear Lake.
"The valley is the site of the richest gold strike in Southern California history and is currently a recreation and camping destination," according to the statement.
Clapboard Town is on the south side of Forest Service Road 2N16, between 2N07 and 2N12. The public is invited to view the excavation work. For more information, call Bill Sapp at 909-382-2658 or check on-line at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/about/fieldschool.shtml

"Cost is $2,850 for University of California undergraduates and $3,150 for University of California graduate students and visiting students. "

Yikes... We should organize an archeological jeep run on John Bull. We can look for jeep parts of the past... Only $1,500 for the week.
