I am looking for a NP242 to put in place of a 231 for the '97 XJ powertrain swap into my '89 Grand Wagoneer. I have owned a few XJ's and love the reliability of the 4.0/AW4 and the full time option the GW originally came with but the 229 will need a spacer made to bolt it to the AW4 due to the 229's integral input shaft housing and input shaft length.
1)What are the differences in the 242's through the years? I know they went to 23 spline in '90-'91.
2)Are they all basically the same as long as it was bolted to an AW4 or are there certain years to avoid?
3)Do they have a bunch of different input shaft lengths like the 231's or again does it not matter as long as it was bolted to an AW4?
