alternator differences 91-98,99-01

I did some searching but couldn't find anything (too many unrelated results)

What are the differences between the 98 and 99 alternators? All of the part crossreferences I can find say they are different applications, but I couldn't find anything on the net saying what the differences are. Considering putting a 160amp alt in my 01 XJ but the one I have access to is for the older setup.

any help would be appreciated.

My friend has a 97 XJ and his alternator is the same as mine in my 95.

The 98+ use a different style plug for the voltage regulator.

84-90 or 91 used an internal voltage regulator instead of being controlled by the PCM.

right... 91-99 are supposed to be completely interchangeable. but was looking for specific details between 99/00, mounting brackets mainly. I think I could deal with the voltage regulator.

in 99 they switched from 2 screw terminals to a single dual pole plug.
